Steel Fabrication Suppliers

The steel fabrication industry is one if not the most important industry in the world today.  Almost every other industry will use steel in their production, such as the construction industry, the automotive industry, sewage plants, electric substations, art, the weapons industry, the shipping industry, and so on.

What is Steel?

Steel is an alloy made mainly of iron.  It also has a carbon content, ranging from 0.2% to 2.1%.  The level of carbon content will determine the type of steel.  Carbon is the most common element used as an alloy in steel, but there are many other elements, such as chromium, manganese, tungsten and vanadium.  Steel fabrication suppliers will often be involved in producing these elements.

If the carbon content in the alloy goes above 2.1%, it is no longer known as steel but rather as cast iron.  Cast iron has a much lower melting point and can hence be casted.  Wrought iron, on the other hand, does contain small levels of carbon but is also not known as steel.  This is because the main key to steel is that is much more resistant to corrosion (rust) and is easier to weld.

The different types of steel that are produced by steel fabrication suppliers that are involved in the production of steel itself are:

  • Mild steel, with a carbon content up to 0.25%
  • Medium carbon steel, which has a carbon content between 0.25% and 0.45%
  • High carbon steel, where the carbon content is between 0.45% and 1.50%

Ultra high carbon steel is also available and used in very specific applications.

Who Are Steel Fabrication Suppliers?

Steel fabrication suppliers are companies that provide other companies – and individuals – with steel products.  They achieve this by generally specialising in a certain type of steel, or a specific process involved in steel fabrication.  Some steel fabrication suppliers provide others with completed steel products, others are involved in building tools used in the steel fabrication industry and others are involved in other processes around steel fabrication, such as project management, software packages or training to name but a few.

Where Are Steel Fabrication Suppliers Located?

Steel fabrication suppliers are located all across the United Kingdom.  There are also many companies that are registered in the United Kingdom but are actually abroad.  This is to enable them to be closer to mines from which they retrieve iron ore and other minerals and metals that are used in producing the steel alloy.  Some of the better known steel fabrication suppliers in the United Kingdom include:

  • Remnant - a company that is fully CITB accredited
  • Stoneman Engineering – who specialise in creating bespoke, custom made steel products
  • Hares of Snape – who pride themselves on their low cost prices
  • Metal Fab Supplies - a company that specialises in producing and supplying steel fabrication companies with the power tools they require
  • Kenyon William Ltd - a company servicing the Manchester area

As you can see, there are many different steel fabrication suppliers available, ranging from those who provide complete steel products, to those who specialise in products involved in the steel fabrication industry, such as tools or alloying elements.
